A WELCOME SIGHT

You caught my eye when I wasn’t even looking -

a lone beacon in a field of green,

a reminder of warmer days.

It’s been one cold season since those nasty winds started blowing.

They’ve kept you from gracing our green mountains and cozy venues…

and you’ve become a seldom sight.

Why ever you have come to Vermont on this mid-September day,

welcome back.

We hope you linger…

And later, after you cross the border on your way back home,

Please…

tell your northern flock

that their friends to the south are missing them.

The inspiration for this poem came during this past weekend's Burlington Baroque Festival. The event featured talented Canadian and American musicians and was an amazing celebration of their magnificent musicianship and of the Baroque era. It was in one of the parking lots that I spotted a Quebec license plate and realized it had been a while since I'd seen one. (Not so long ago they had been a common sight.) This poem is meant to be a heartfelt reflection on the current situation. We are ALL hurt by the current political situation. Like-minded people can still come together and support each other.
